The short hose behind the dryer, and what wrecks it

White vinyl hose is the worst offender. It is still sold. It melts and it holds lint. Foil coil is next worst. Both crush flat when the machine slides back. Look at the back of yours. If it is ribbed plastic, replace it regardless of airflow.

Pedestals change the geometry. A front-loader on a pedestal lifts the outlet above the wall stub. The hose then dives down and kinks at the collar. Stacked closets do the same thing in reverse. Gas dryers add a flex connector in that cramped space. Two kinked lines, one push.

We cut semi-rigid aluminum to measured length. No coiled slack behind the cabinet. Clamps at both collars, foil tape over seams. No sheet metal screws anywhere. Screw tips grow lint beards inside the duct. Tight clearance gets a rigid periscope flat to the drywall.

Transition hose stays inside the room. Through walls, floors, or attic, it must be rigid metal. Postwar ranch homes often put the dryer on an outside wall with a short through-wall stub. Split-levels and upstairs laundry rooms run long duct to a roof cap. Those runs get checked separately.

If the hose is new and the exterior flap still sits dead, stop buying hose. The restriction is downstream. Replacing the connector alone wastes the visit.
